Universal Audio has brought FATSO to its native plugin range. Producers can now use its compression and tape-style saturation without attaching UA hardware, a practical change for laptop sessions and studios built around other audio interfaces.
FATSO native: what has actually changed?
Universal Audio announced the native release of its Empirical Labs FATSO Tape Simulator on 13 October. The important news is availability: the native plugins run on a Mac or Windows computer without requiring Apollo or UAD accelerator hardware. FATSO itself is an established processor. This release gives producers another way to use it, especially when mixing away from a DSP-equipped studio.
FATSO Jr and FATSO Sr: two versions of the same idea
The package includes Jr and Sr variants, developed with Empirical Labs founder Dave Derr. Both combine compression with saturation inspired by the hardware. Sr adds deeper control, including sidechain filtering, variable transformer saturation and additional compressor parameters. It is worth distinguishing this from a tape-machine model: the source hardware was itself designed to deliver a combination of analogue colour and dynamic control.

Four compression modes, from control to character
Buss, G.P., Tracking and Spank provide four compression behaviours. UA positions Buss as a gentle mix-glue option, Tracking towards vocal and instrument control, and Spank at the more aggressive end. Input drive, transformer colour and the Warmth circuit shape the result alongside compression. That combination is the reason to investigate FATSO rather than treating it as one more transparent dynamics plugin.
Native access changes the buying question
If you work across a desktop studio and a laptop, removing the hardware dependency is more significant than another preset bank. Native and Apollo processing still serve different workflows: mixing on the computer is not the same requirement as tracking through an Apollo DSP chain. Existing DSP owners should check the specific native-upgrade offer in their UA account, rather than assuming that a previous purchase automatically includes this release.
Where to find the product details
The launch announcement includes a limited introductory offer and availability through UAD Spark Studio. We are leaving the current regional price to the product page and retailer, so this news report does not turn a dated launch figure into a permanent promise. Our FATSO listing provides the next step if its combined compression and saturation approach fits your sessions.
