Kazrog Vac Rac TSL brings boutique tube compression into the DAW

Kazrog has released Vac Rac TSL, an officially developed version of Inward Connections’ tube optical compressor. The launch combines hardware-derived voicings with controls designed for contemporary in-the-box mixing.

Vac Rac TSL: an official Inward Connections emulation

Kazrog announced Vac Rac TSL on 27 October, working with Inward Connections and builder Steve Firlotte. The new plugin models a two-channel tube optical compressor, with more than one hardware reference behind the interface. It is aimed at producers looking for levelling and tonal character in the same processor, rather than dynamics control that stays deliberately invisible.

Three voicings and a transformer blend

TSL-5, TSL-4 and TSL-3 modes represent different hardware units. A Transformers control blends towards a transformerless signal path modelled from an original Vac Rac modular unit. Instead of presenting one fixed flavour of tube compression, Kazrog gives the user several related starting points. The release describes these as different behaviours and tonal balances; that should not be confused with an independently measured claim that one is better.

Modern controls around the optical-compressor core

The feature set includes ratios from 2:1 to 12:1, sidechain filtering, stereo linking and mid/side operation. A THD control adjusts tube-stage drive, while wet/dry mix supports parallel processing. Analog Entropy introduces modelled component variation. These controls broaden the plugin’s use beyond a strict panel recreation, giving producers ways to manage how strongly low frequencies trigger compression and how much processed signal reaches the mix.

Mac, Windows and Linux support

Kazrog lists Mac, Windows and Linux support, including native Apple Silicon and Intel compatibility on macOS. Available formats vary by platform, with Linux support including LV2. The demo periodically silences its output and disables preset saving. It is therefore suitable for auditioning the behaviour, with limitations to account for when judging a session.

Where it sits in a producer’s toolkit

A new compressor is most interesting when it offers a different response to tools already in the session. Vac Rac TSL puts tube drive and optical levelling together, while its routing options give it scope on stereo material. We have not tested it, so this is a release report rather than a sound-quality verdict. Compare it with the compressor plugins you already use, especially if your collection covers similar ground.
