RC-20’s October update—and a better way to use texture.

XLN’s latest listed update focuses on the platform and fixes. Here’s a practical reason to revisit the texture tool you may already own.

Not every plugin update is a reason to buy again. XLN Audio’s release notes list RC-20 Retro Color 1.5.2 on 8 October 2026, with an updated platform, a notification feature, bug fixes and interface improvements. That makes this a useful maintenance check for owners—and a prompt to reconsider how much texture a track actually needs.

What is documented in the update

The 1.5.2 release entry does not announce a new synthesis engine or a new collection of effects. Earlier entries list an automation fix in 1.5.1 and preset, browser and interface changes in 1.5.0. [1] Check the installer and compatibility information in your account before updating a system used for important sessions.

Save your project and a reference bounce first. Reopen the session after the update and compare the places where automation or exposed texture matters. This is a suggested maintenance routine, not a report that we have tested the new version.

Make the clean version worth keeping

RC-20 Retro Color brings noise, wobble, distortion and other colour treatments together. [2] Before using them, finish a clean version of the musical part. A strong chord rhythm gives texture something to frame; a weak part often just becomes a weak part with crackle.

Pick one audible change first. Try an unstable pitch treatment on an atmospheric layer, or a small amount of grit on a keyboard sound. Compare quietly and at matched volume. Keep the dry track available so you can hear what the processing has removed as well as what it adds.

Use contrast instead of a permanent filter

Build a worn introduction, then make the main section cleaner when the drums arrive. Or keep the central hook clear and put the more extreme treatment on a supporting answer. Either choice creates a relationship the ear can follow.

Check the ending of notes and the silence between phrases. Noise can fill a useful gap, but it can also make the arrangement feel busy when you intended a pause. Automate the return or edit the printed audio if that gives you more control.

Who should look at it?

Existing owners should start with the release notes and their account, not a second licence purchase. New buyers should compare the current RC-20 listing with the effects already in their DAW. Trial the workflow if available and check your system requirements.

For a different way to generate character, our sample-pack shortlist includes found percussion and breaks. For a wider effects comparison, read ten effects to take a loop somewhere new.
