10 plugins worth making room for in 2026

A focused shortlist for synths, groove, mixing and finishing. Choose the job you need done before choosing the plugin.

The best plugin collection is the one you can navigate with a track playing. This 2026 shortlist covers ten different production jobs, from building a bass sound to clearing room for a vocal. It is a researched selection, not a ranking based on listening tests: the numbers help you browse, and do not imply that number one beats number ten.

Start with a sound you want to make

1. Pigments 7 — for exploring synthesis

Arturia Pigments combines multiple synthesis approaches with modulation and sequencing. [1] Consider it if designing an evolving sound is part of the fun. Skip a deep synth for now if you mainly want a handful of ready-to-play patches.

2. Diva — for an analogue-style starting point

u-he Diva models analogue synthesizer building blocks. [2] Put it on your trial list for bass, chords and leads, then test a busy project rather than one isolated note. Your computer’s ability to run your arrangement matters more than an impressive solo demo.

3. Scaler 3 — for getting beyond the first progression

Scaler 3 is a harmony and composition tool. [3] Treat it as a way to explore choices, then edit the voicing and rhythm yourself. It makes more sense when harmony is your bottleneck than when you already have plenty of musical ideas.

Add movement and character

4. ShaperBox 3 — for rhythmic variation

ShaperBox 3 offers drawable modulation across creative effects. [4] Try it on an ordinary percussion loop and keep only the variation that improves the groove.

5. EchoBoy — for repeats with a role

EchoBoy is Soundtoys’ echo and delay tool. [5] Audition it where a vocal ends, rather than covering the whole phrase. A delay should answer the part, not continually talk over it.

6. Decapitator — for deliberate saturation

Decapitator is a saturation processor. [5] Compare a level-matched version on a bass or drum bus. If the appeal disappears when the volume is matched, keep your money for something else.

7. RC-20 Retro Color — for controlled wear

RC-20 Retro Color brings several texture effects into one interface. [6] It is a candidate for keys and resampled melodies, but do not confuse a recognisable lo-fi treatment with a finished musical identity.

Leave space for the song

8. FabFilter Pro-Q 4 — for targeted EQ

Pro-Q 4 includes dynamic and spectral processing. [7] Start with an audible problem, not a perfect-looking analyser curve. A stock EQ remains a valid alternative.

9. Trackspacer — for relationships between parts

Trackspacer uses a sidechain signal to guide frequency-dependent reduction in another track. [8] Try a small amount when a vocal and synth occupy the same space; listen for movement that becomes distracting.

10. Ozone 12 Standard — for a mastering workspace

Ozone 12 Standard provides an editable mastering chain. [9] Compare editions before buying, and compare the processed master at matched loudness. It will not remove the need to revisit an overcrowded arrangement.

Choose one improvement, not ten purchases

Save a difficult session, write down its main problem and trial the tool that addresses it. Check the exact licence, operating system, plugin format and activation process on the current listing. Existing owners should inspect upgrade eligibility first.
