Before you buy another plugin, try this.

A practical five-question check to help you buy for your music, rather than your plugin folder.

A sale gives you a reason to look. Your music should give you the reason to buy.

It is easy to hear a polished demonstration and imagine that the missing piece in your track is a new tool. Before opening the checkout, take an unfinished session and work through these five questions.

1. What problem am I solving?

Write one sentence: “I need this to help me…” Finish it with a task, such as making a vocal more intelligible or finding a chord change for a chorus. “It sounds amazing” is an observation, but it does not tell you where the product fits.

If you cannot name a problem, you can still buy something for exploration. Just make that the decision, and set a budget for it.

2. Can I do it with what I own?

Give your existing tools fifteen focused minutes on the same task. Save a version of the session first. Try a different setting, a different routing choice or a simpler chain.

A new plugin should earn a place in your workflow, not just a place in your menu.

The point is to understand what a new purchase would improve. It might offer a sound you cannot make, fewer steps, or an interface that makes a difficult process easier to understand.

3. Have I compared it fairly?

If a trial is offered, use it on your own material. Compare at similar perceived loudness and switch between versions without changing the rest of the mix. Louder can feel more impressive even when it is not more useful.

Also check the ordinary work: opening an older session, saving a preset, resizing the interface and using automation. A tool that fits your habits is more likely to get used.

4. What am I actually buying?

Confirm whether the price is for a full licence, upgrade, crossgrade or subscription. Check your operating system, plugin format and activation requirements. For a subscription, read what happens to access and downloaded material when it ends.

Compare the final checkout price in your currency. A discount percentage alone does not tell you whether this is the right purchase.

5. Will it help my next three tracks?

Name three sessions where you could use it. If that is easy, you have a practical reason to consider it. If it is difficult, save the product page and come back when a project gives you a clearer need.
